What are the benefits of Bikram yoga?

Why the heated room?

Bikram Yoga is intentionally performed in a room heated to a minimum of 105 degrees. This allows the body to warm up, making muscles more elastic and less susceptible to injury. The heat aids the body in burning fat more easily and speeds up the breakdown of glucose on fatty acids. Vasodilation and sweating during class aids the removal of waste products and allows the body to rid itself of deeply stored toxins. The unique sequence of postures combined with the heat is what makes Bikram yoga so special.

How does the yoga work?

Bikram yoga is scientifically designed to open up 100% of the body from every muscle, organ, tendon, bone, gland and more. The series begins with Pranayama breathing, good for your lungs and respiratory system. Each posture systematically moves through the entire body to enhance, reshape, rebuild and energize you. The postures have a tourniquet effect through stretching, balancing and creating pressure. During vasoconstriction, the blood supply is cut off thus creating pressure. Upon release, vasodilation occurs when the blood rushes back into the veins and arteries flushing out toxins and oxygenating the body. The postures develop strength, flexibility, determination and awareness. Creating a deeper connection with your body promotes unity and well-being. As long as you are trying the right way and giving your full, honest effort, you will receive 100% of the benefits.

Why is it important to learn from a Certified Bikram Yoga Studio and Instructor?

Bikram Choudhury personally trains and certifies his instructors to ensure that his methods and philosophy are properly taught. Bikram method yoga is a specialized form of yoga requiring appropriate training and knowledge to teach it effectively. Certified teachers in good standing have a continuing connection with Bikram Choudhury and his training staff, allowing the Certified studio to draw from all of the resources Bikram's training center has to offer. Many can claim that they teach "Bikram Yoga" but unless there is a Certified instructor supervising how and what is taught at the studio, you are not getting the true Bikram yoga. A studio guided by a Certified instructor provides the best possible instruction in the Bikram method. To find a Certified Studio go to www.bikramyoga.com and choose "class finder" from the left-hand menu.
